Sunday 3rd February is when the church celebrates the Presentation of Christ in the Temple and we hear Simeon’s prayer as he holds Christ in his arms:
‘Master, now you are dismissing your servant in peace,
according to your word;
for my eyes have seen your salvation,
which you have prepared in the presence of all peoples,
a light for revelation to the Gentiles
and for glory to your people Israel’ (Luke 2:22-40).
This prayer has been active throughout the centuries since Simeon held Christ in his arms and you and I are part of that prayer ‘a light for the revelation to the Gentiles.’ As non-Jews, Gentiles, we have responded to the light that is Christ to become children of God.
The power of prayer. Prayer that continues to be answered as people awaken to the light of Christ in their lives. Prayer that is still active in time and space. Simeon’s prayer was for people he would never personally meet.
May Simeon’s prayer be an encouragement to us as we pray for others.
